February 2, 2009 [Taoyuan, Taiwan]: Scandinavian Health Ltd (SHL or SHL Group) announced the launch of a new Precision Pen Injector (PPI). This unique injector uses a distinctive “power spring” to deliver small but highly accurate doses of Restylane Vital™Light a treatment for rejuvenating delicate skin areas such as hands, neck, décolletage and face. Restylane is produced by the Swedish biotechnology/medical device company Q-Med AB.

The compact and easy-to-use device replaces traditional syringes where accuracy can be difficult to control. The new PPI will enable users to quickly and precisely deliver 200 doses of 10µl with an accuracy far exceeding the requirements of pen-injector standards. Due to the microscopic tolerances involved with this product and the constant high force requirements for a high-viscous solution, it was impossible for SHL, the medical device manufacturer, to use conventional design methods.

Commenting on the device design Anders Karlsson said, “It was unlike any project we have undertaken before, but we overcame the odds and delivered a product that is far more accurate and efficient than anything else currently on the market. This device features unprecedented repeatability for a system that can consistently and accurately produce extremely short plunger movements with a maximum displacement variation of
+/-0.026 mm. That’s less than half the width of a human strand of hair.”

It was one of these pipeline products that provided the perfect platform for the PPI, enabling SHL Medical to very quickly develop a solution for Q-Med.
